The Black Widow Spider
The Black Widow spider or the Latrodectus spider can be found around the world and especially in North America. The spider can normally be spotted by the bright red hour glass shape spot on it’s back. Female black widows are quite larger than male black widows and their spots are a more defined than the males. The female spiders have unusually large venom glands and its bite can be particularly harmful to humans. However, despite the size of the glands the bites are rarely fatal.
Black widows are normally found in rocks, debris, the underside of ledges and wherever a web can be strung. During the colder months these spiders may enter buildings to search for shelter. The female spider will stay close to her web and spends most of her day hanging up side down. If anything comes near to hear or her egg mass she will defensively bite.
An egg sac can hold from 25- 750+ eggs. The sacs are normally a papery brown and bout 1/2 an inch long. They are shaped like an oval.
