The wasps or the Vespula family is carnivorous. If found at a safe distance from your home they can be very beneficial. They will keep other insects at bay, acting as a natural repellant. Wasps tend to go after smaller insects where they can lay their eggs inside. They also can pollinate flowers but normally leave that work up to Honey bees.
It can be agreed that wasps in and near the home are not preferred. Most wasps tend to build their home in the ground and it can be hard to detect where their nest is. There are a couple tricks you can do around the home to keep your home free from their painful sting.
1) Keep food sources, especially protein, indoors.
As mentioned above the Vespula family is carnivorous and they feed mainly off protein. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice turkey sandwich out doors but make sure you clean up after yourself when you are done. It is important to note that your pet’s food is also a food source. If you keep your pet’s food outside make sure it is in a secure place where a wondering wasps can’t snatch a quick meal.
2) Put away the summer sodas.
Starting at the end of summer and going into fall the wasps diet switches from a protein base to a sugar base. The sugar helps with the reproductive process and increases lifespan. This could be problematic to any Fourth of July parties you might want to throw. Make sure you keep a lid on the trash where empty cans are and try not to leave sodas out for too long.
3) Keep cucumbers handy.
When it is time for the Fourth of July party cut up some cucumbers into thin slices and leave them around your yard. Wasps don’t like the acidic property. This could be a last minute defense to save your party.
There are also a couple of things that you don’t want to do.
1) Don’t kill a wasp.
When a wasp is killed a pheromone is released. Other wasps will come to investigate why there comrade is missing. Once they find out what happened chances are they will not be happy. Remember, killing one wasp is a guaranteed way to attract more.
2) Don’t wear over scented perfumes.
Just like wasps are attracted to sweet foods and drinks they are also attracted to sweet smells.
